Department Update Following Loss of Engine 2

October 15, 2025 | Chief Paul Givens

The Hobart Volunteer Fire Department wishes to update the community on our operational status following the loss of Engine 2 in September.

Engine 2, which served the department faithfully for over two decades, was lost during a maintenance-related fire at Station 1. No firefighters were injured in the incident. The department's immediate priority was ensuring the safety of all personnel, and we are grateful that this was achieved.

Since September, the department has been operating with Engine 1 as our primary response unit. We have also strengthened our mutual aid agreements with neighboring departments to ensure adequate coverage for our service area. Response times have remained within acceptable parameters.

An Engine Replacement Fund has been established to raise the approximately $650,000 needed to acquire a suitable replacement apparatus. The HVFD Auxiliary has already begun organizing fundraising events in support of this effort, including the bake sale and rummage auction at the VFW which raised $1,286.43.

The department remains committed to serving the Village of Hobart with the same dedication and professionalism that has defined this organization since 1872. We are confident that, with the support of our community, we will restore full operational capacity.

We thank the residents of Hobart for their patience, understanding, and generosity during this time.
