HVFD Ladies Auxiliary

Serving the Department Since 1874

The Ladies Auxiliary was established in 1874, just two years after the founding of the fire department itself. From its earliest days, the Auxiliary has operated as far more than a support group. It is the organizational spine of the department, responsible for logistics, recordkeeping, ceremonial duties, and the preservation of institutional continuity. The Auxiliary does not observe from the sidelines. It holds the line.

That tradition of structured, purposeful service has defined the organization for over 150 years. The Auxiliary manages the department's fundraising operations, coordinates community outreach, and provides direct logistical support during emergency operations. Equipment purchases, station improvements, and training that fall outside the department's operating budget have historically been made possible through the Auxiliary's efforts.

Leadership

President Ruth Ann McCoy

Under the leadership of president Ruth Ann McCoy, the Auxiliary continues its long tradition of service to the department and the Hobart community. Following the loss of Engine 2 in September 2025, McCoy organized the department's first fundraising response within days of the incident, a bake sale and rummage auction at the Hobart VFW on Canal Street that raised $1,286.43.

Engine Replacement Campaign

The Auxiliary has taken a leading role in fundraising for a replacement apparatus following the loss of Engine 2. The estimated cost of a suitable replacement pumper engine is approximately $650,000. The Auxiliary's fundraising efforts have included the VFW bake sale and rummage auction, an October chili cook-off, and the annual Spring Dinner, with additional events planned throughout the year.

Every contribution to the Engine Replacement Fund, regardless of size, brings the department closer to restoring full operational capacity. The Auxiliary is grateful for the continued generosity of the Hobart community.
